It is conveniently located in Erfurt's eastern outskirts, just another 20 minutes away from Weimar. Erfurt's city centre and the main train station can be reached within 4 km; the fairground and the airport are a 20 to 30 minute drive away.

Since Germany's reunification, Erfurt is the city nearest to the geographical centre of the country. It lies in the southern part of the 'Thüringer Becken', within the valley of the River Gera. To the south, the city is surrounded by hills.
